Living with a Lung Disease in the Summer Heat

Summer heat in the UK can be a hit and miss affair, but for those living with lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or pulmonary fibrosis, a heatwave can be a challenging time. As temperatures soar during heatwaves, individuals with lung conditions face additional obstacles in managing their symptoms.

High temperatures and humidity levels can intensify the already compromised breathing capacity of those with respiratory conditions. The heat can cause airways to narrow, making it harder for oxygen to reach the lungs, leading to breathlessness and increased respiratory distress. Additionally, high heat and humidity can trigger inflammation in the airways, exacerbating symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

If you are travelling to a hot country or if there is a heatwave in the UK, here are some tips on how to keep cool and stay well:

  1. Stay Hydrated: It's crucial to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, which can further strain the respiratory system. Opt for cool, non-alcoholic, and caffeine-free drinks to stay hydrated.
  2. Avoid Peak Heat: Plan outdoor activities early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day to minimise exposure to extreme heat.
  3. Create a Cool Environment: Use fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day to block out sunlight. If you don't have access to air conditioning, consider visiting public places with air-conditioned facilities.
  4. Monitor Air Quality: Heatwaves often come with increased pollution levels. Keep an eye on local air quality reports and try to stay indoors on days when air pollution is high. The UK Government publish this useful site which gives a 5 day air pollution forecast https://uk-air.defra.gov.forecasting/uk/
  5. Seek Medical Advice: Consult with your healthcare provider to ensure your current treatment plan is suitable for the heatwave conditions. They may suggest adjusting medications or provide additional guidance based on your specific condition.
  6. Look after yourself: Make sure you have enough of your necessary supplies, including medications such as saline and nebuliser accessories.

Living with a lung disease in a heatwave can be challenging, but with proper planning and self-care, it is possible to mitigate the impact of extreme heat on respiratory health. By staying hydrated and following our tips above, individuals with lung diseases can better manage their symptoms during heatwaves. Remember to prioritize self-care, listen to your body, and reach out to healthcare professionals for guidance. With the right strategies in place, you can navigate through the scorching days of summer while keeping your lung health a top priority.
